Looking for a book called something like "I²", or I squared, or perhaps "me²": it's about an eight-bit artificial intelligence that grows up inside a computer, playing something like Tube Wars to learn how to survive. it gets installed into a robot body which is shipped somewhere on a train and the AI has to figure out how to reattach some of its limbs and escape, where it hides in a barn and is discovered by the farmer's daughter who menaces it with a pitchfork.
sry, can't remember the author.
@Nikolai_Kingsley Do you remember roughly which decade you saw/read it?
later than 1990 and before 2010, which isn't much help.
@Nikolai_Kingsley That still narrows it down then. Short story in an anthology or a whole book?
@Nikolai_Kingsley Sounds a bit like The Adolescence of P-1 by Thomas J Ryan?
that's not it, although there are similarities - i'm pretty sure i didn't imagine the whole "trying to screw your arms on when you don't have arms" sequence on the train. it was an entire book.
@Nikolai_Kingsley Ok that sounds vaguely familiar. Not sure where from though.
i know, right? arggh!
