Question. When building an html website. Is there a reason so many devs create their own body and content divs? I mean, for a simple static site, is <body> and <p> and <footer> not enough? I'm really just wondering. I can't seem to figure it out.

To be more specific.

I am currently modifying my bash blog script and realized that all the content generated has like 538764 div tags associates with it. I would like to change that just to utilize the aforementioned tags, but realize now that I would have to rewrite the entire script. I guess I just don't understand the obsession with custom div tags when there are plenty of builtin tags already there.
