Studies have been made on how many times a member of a species will attempt a goal-oriented task before that member stops making attempts. How many times will a mouse attempt to open a puzzle box with food in it? Or a rat, a dog, a crow, a chimpanzee? Variations occur, but there are ranges of responses that have some regularity.

Higher primates... there is apparently no "give up" mechanism in many of them. A trait that is a benefit or a detriment, depending on how YOU decide it is applied.
