Political consultant Matt Herdman says, "Elon Musk and Donald Trump are stealing seniors' hard-earned benefits. It's already happening, and it'll get worse if they go through with closing branch offices and cutting staff."

Last week, he was told that SSA would fix the problem, but as of last Friday, he had not gotten his February and March SS payments.

Jeff Nesbit, public affairs chief for 5 federal agencies/departments including SSA under 4 presidents, shared this story on X, saying: "So incredibly sad that Musk/DOGE are now preying on people like this. I hope older Americans understand the assault underway against Social Security right now."

After making multiple calls to SSA, during which he was "put on hold and then eventually disconnected" and securing an appointment that was ultimately rescheduled for the next week, Johnson went to his local SSA office, one of several sites DOGE now wants to shut down across the country.

He waited and waited to be seen at the SSA office and finally jumped the line and insisted he was alive.

Danny Westneat tells the story of what happened to Leonard "Ned" Johnson after his wife got a notice from their bank in February that the Social Security Administration requested a return for benefits paid out after the supposed death of her husband. Since Ned was alive, his wife figured it was a scam, but SSA then yanked $5,201 from their bank account.

"This week, a still-more ominous threat appears to be circling. Bloomberg reports that three individuals representing private equity concerns — firms in an insidious financial industry intent on harvesting anything that can rake in a profit for the ultrarich — have now shown up, alongside DOGE, to meddle in the life-sustaining work of the SSA."

Am sure Trump wants a 10% "tribute" off the top, like any self-respecting mob boss. That's 100,000,000,000 per trillion paid out.

@grrlscientist Thanks for posting this; I just read this article elsewhere and was coming to post it myself.

One of the bad bits is that Johnson seems to have gotten NO answer as to just why he was DOGE-died.

It could (and likely will) happen to any of us. Johnson was fortunate that there was still a somewhat functioning Social Security office near him, and that he could get there himself to argue his case that he was alive (imagine trying to do that on the phone or thru email or chat!!).

What happens when bureaucracy gets it wrong? An 82-year-old man, Ned Johnson, was mistakenly declared dead by Social Security due to an error linked to a program led by Elon Musk's team. His experience, described as "surreal," reveals the harsh impact of government mismanagement on innocent lives. This story highlights the urgent need for effective solutions to ensure citizens are not harmed by inefficiency. Crooks and Liars · 'Dead' Ned Johnson Turns Out To Be Very Much AliveBy Ed Scarce

"Since the arrival of a team from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, Social Security is in a far more precarious place than has been widely understood, according to Leland Dudek, the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration. “I don’t want the system to collapse,” Dudek said in a closed-door meeting last week, according to a recording obtained by ProPublica. He also said that it “would be catastrophic for the people in our country” if DOGE were to make changes at his agency that were as sweeping as those at USAID, the Treasury Department and elsewhere.

Dudek’s comments, delivered to a group of senior staff and Social Security advocates attending both in person and virtually, offer an extraordinary window into the thinking of a top agency official in the volatile early days of the second Trump administration. The Washington Post first reported Dudek’s acknowledgement that DOGE is calling the shots at Social Security and quoted several of his statements. But the full recording reveals that he went much further, citing not only the actions being taken at the agency by the people he repeatedly called “the DOGE kids,” but also extensive input he has received from the White House itself. When a participant in the meeting asked him why he wouldn’t more forcefully call out President Donald Trump’s continued false claims about widespread Social Security fraud as “BS,” Dudek answered, “So we published, for the record, what was actually the numbers there on our website. This is dealing with — have you ever worked with someone who’s manic-depressive?”

Throughout the meeting, Dudek made alarming statements about the perils facing the Social Security system, but he did so in an oddly informal, discursive manner. (...) “Are we going to break something?” Dudek asked at one point, referring to what DOGE has been doing with Social Security data. “I don’t know.”"

"“DOGE Has 10 Staffers at Social Security in Hunt for Dead People,” the headlines read this past week.

I found a dead person on Social Security. Right here in Seattle, on Capitol Hill.

Of course the circumstances of Ned Johnson’s death were completely the opposite of what Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency had claimed was rampant.

“You wake up one day and discover you’re dead,” Johnson told me. “It’s been truly surreal.”

That’s the biggest difference — my deceased guy turns out to be very much alive. Musk is contending that hordes of dead people are listed as alive in the Social Security databases, and are fraudulently still drawing benefits (which the Social Security director disputes).

Johnson is 82 and still kicking. Yet sometime last month, someone or something led Social Security to both tag him as dead and start clawing back his benefits.

Johnson’s strange trip through the netherworld began in February, when a letter from his bank arrived addressed to his wife, Pam."
